SOMEONE MARRY BARRY (2014) – Movie Review ★★★★
Director: Rob Pearlstein – Cast: Tyler Labine, Damon Wayans, Jr., Lucy Punch, Hayes MacArthur & Thomas Middleditch – Synopsis: Three friends selfishly decide to rid themselves of their inappropriate best friend Barry (Labine) by finding him a wife – but when Barry meets Melanie (Punch) a woman just like him and someone he connects with the friends troubles double – Verdict: There’s something loveable, charming and downright hilarious about Canadian actor Tyler Labine, he fills the screen with an almost John Candy presence playing the life of the party, downtrodden, loveable rogue so so well and is slowly emerging as a reliable leading man – in his latest outing Someone Marry Barry Tyler Labine is simply outrageous them early scenes at the funeral had me in stitches and his chemistry with the quirky British actress Lucy Punch who also starred with Labine in the Horror Comedy Cottage Country is a delight to watch – Overall I found myself having so much fun with Someone Marry Barry – Rob Pearlstein’s screenplay is 87mins of romantic hilarity and if like me your a fan of Tyler Labine’s work then this movie will certainly not disappoint….
ALL IS LOST (2013/4) – Movie Review ★★★★
All is Lost stars Robert Redford – After a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face VERDICT after watching & enjoying 2013’s Wall Street movie Margin Call with it’s hugely impressive ensemble cast I was interested to see how filmmaker J.C. Chandor would handle the complete opposite – one actor (Robert Redford), buckets & buckets of water, a sailing boat and the modern technology that is the the green screen – well I can tell you this much J.C. Chandor not only handled these scenario’s but he captured the struggle of a sailor stranded at sea incredibly, the filmmaker allows it’s star Robert Redford the freedom to show off his underrated acting talents, it’s a picture from a director who has some serious future behind the camera – in All Is Lost Robert Redford commands the screen giving one his finest onscreen performances for many a year, it’s not only his acting but his physicality that impresses, he’s totally convincing as this sailor all alone at sea fighting against mother nature demonstrating great determination and barrels of courage to survive – All Is Lost is one of them pictures that doesn’t have much in the way of dialog but is delivered in a manner that actions speak louder than words – it’s so refreshing to see an original indie drama that contains no sex, no excessive language and hardly any violence BRAVO to Chandor and Redford for this engrossing and emotional journey, one that I would highly recommend….

From filmmaker Jonathan Glazer comes UNDER THE SKIN a haunting tale of an Alien preying on Hitchhikers in Scotland – the film stars Scarlett Johansson and Paul Brannigan and is based around Michel Faber’s novel of the same name – Glazer also brought us the delicious Sexy Beast and the strange yet somewhat wonderful Birth so teaming up with one of my favorite actresses Johansson and with a backdrop that is Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands my anticipation for the movie couldn’t be any higher – here’s the official poster (that is visually stunning), some movie stills and the latest official trailer…. RAZE (2013/4) – Movie Review ★★★★
Raze stars Zoë Bell, Rachel Nichols, Sherilyn Fenn, Tracie Thoms, Bailey Anne Borders & Rosario Dawson – this movie is one hell of a kick-ass ride – it follows two abducted women & 50 other women who are forced to entertain some rich & privileged guests by fighting each other to the death using their bare hands – VERDICT damn this movie was brutal & intense! from them opening scenes of Jamie played by Continuum star Rachel Niccols obviously drugged, waking in a cell then stumbling her way through some darkly lit tunnels until she comes face to face with Zoe Bell’s Sabrina who she has to fight to survive is spectacular and relentless stuff – RAZE is a low-budget thrill ride from Josh C Waller who’s making his directorial debut – the film’s score is atmospheric giving it an overall feel like a scary-ass first person shoot-em, the fight scenes that are quite horrific and realistic mostly take place inside a circular dirt-floored pit that’s contained within a dungeonlike labyrinth of tunnels and prison rooms that are home to the women captives – although the movie has a weak and somewhat familiar storyline it’s mystery of who’s running the show keeps you on the edge of your seat – overall RAZE is an explosive, entertaining action packed movie that will have you feeling like a punchbag after it’s exhausting 85mins….
From Seth MacFarlane the man who brought us the hilarious TED comes A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST a new comedy western following a coward of a farmer who seeks the help of a gunslinger’s wife to help him win back the woman who deserted him – the film stars Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris, Giovanni Ribisi and Sarah Silverman – here’s some brilliant character posters along with the new redband (adults only) trailer…. With the brilliant Hatfields & McCoys, Man of Steel and next years Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit it seems Kevin Costner is back headlining the movie world once more and that makes me a happy man – in 3 Days to Kill he plays Ethan Runner a secret agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter whilst eliminating the bud guys – the film is directed by McG who’s credits include Charlie’s Angels, Terminator Salvation and We Are Marshall and starring alongside Costner is the gorgeous Amber Heard, the ultra talented Hailee Steinfeld and the Danish beauty Connie Nielsen – the film has a dark comic feel to it with Costner rocking the action scenes & Amber Heard looking deliciously sexy as always – check out the trailer…. Renny Harlin has his critics but I’m not one of them – with films such as Cliffhanger, Mindhunters, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea and of course Die Hard 2 Harlin specializes in making sure you have some fun whilst watching the big screen and I applaud that style of filmmaker.
