Creed (2015) – Movie Trailer

I have never met anybody who didn’t like at least one of the Rocky movies, from it’s exciting training montages, it’s thrilling music that accompanied each scene, the brilliant choreographed fight scenes and great cast led by the enigmatic Sylvester Stallone, the Rocky movies played such a huge part of my childhood and I still annually watch the box set to this day – so being a big fan and hearing of another chapter being told I was certainly pretty excited – here’s the new CREED trailer, it looks impressive, humble and really centers itself on the films main character Adonis Johnson played by Michael B. Jordan next seen playing Johnny Storm in the Fantastic 4 reboot

creed2

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born.  Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa. Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend

We’re all guilty of it, shamelessly looking at an actors body of working and criticizing them for not living up to their high standards of yesteryear – recently I compared the careers of movie legends Al Pacino with Robert De Niro, in their hay day their movies were sublime and their performances staggering yet in the last 12-15yrs both actors have lost their way, both have failed to ignite the screen with the same level of passion, intensity & quality – remember when Pacino was shouting “Say hello to my little friend” in De Palma’s classic Scarface and De Niro was cracking a baseball bat over someone’s skull in the wonderful Untouchables – they were the days, both starred in so many amazing films so I wonder why it is that these 2 stars are now settling for pretty average roles in lets face it pretty average movies? Maybe the great roles of today (of which there are few) are now falling to a younger generation of movie talent such as DiCaprio and Bale? Or maybe their happy with their lot, they’re still regarded as 2 of the greatest living actors so why not do roles as a favor for a friend or simply for the bigger payout? Whatever the reason, good news could be around the corner – the pair could soon reunite on Martin Scorsese’s gangster thriller The Irishman and with veteran Joe Pesci rumored to be on board this will have any film fan worth their salt purring like a cat in heat – so although the last 15yrs have been a mixed bag for Pacino and De Niro, I’m sure you will agree the movie world is still a brighter place with these two legends of our screen in it….

Happy Anniversary JAWS

In 1975 on June 20th the world of film was introduced to JAWS – based on Peter Benchley’s novel of the same name, this film was the first summer blockbuster – JAWS broke numerous box office records, won 3 Oscars and made it NOT safe to go into the water – Steven Spielberg’s movie is still regarded by many including myself as his best achievement behind the camera – even today 40 years after it’s release JAWS holds up well as a cinematic triumph, it still scares the daylights out of me, it’s acting by the main trio of actors is top notch and it’s simple yet terrifying John Williams score sends my body into a quivering goose bump sort of mess – so congrats Steven Spielberg and all involved in making JAWS one of the Best Movies I have seen in the last 40yrs !

When the Master of Horror Stephen King calls the film “gorgeous and just fucking terrifying” you know Guillermo del Toro’s latest gothic horror CRIMSON PEAK is going to be something very special – first of what a great cast Mia Wasikowska who was recently blowing us all away with her performances in Only Lovers Left Alive and Map to the Stars, Charlie Hunnam the star of Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, the gorgeous Jessica Chastain who’s roles in Zero Dark Thirty and A Most Violent Year were remarkable and last but least the superb Tom Hiddleston who also starred in Only Lovers Left Alive with Mia and rocked playing the villain Loki in Thor & The Avengers – I for one can’t wait for this beauty, take a look at the posters below

Jurassic World (2015) – Movie Review

The last entry in the Jurassic franchise was 14yrs ago way back in 2001 and was a pretty ordinary monster movie so when the word came out that Spielberg who directed the first two movies in the trilogy had approached Safety Not Guaranteed’s Colin Trevorrow I was surprised and slightly apprehensive about it’s final outcome – Trevorro’s movie takes place 22yrs after the events of 1993’s Jurassic Park, Hammond’s original concept is now a reality and us humans can mingle and watch the dinosaurs whilst traveling on futuristic rides set around the landscape known as Jurassic World – but like all businesses the Park has to make money so the powers within create a new attraction, a Dinosaur that’s bigger, faster & more terrifying than anything that’s come before – well I won’t reveal what happens next in the movie but here’s my thoughts on Trevorro’s Jurassic World

JurassicWorld

For all you directors involved in remakes, sequels or prequels of classic movies of yesteryear watch Jurassic World – Colin Trevorrow demonstrates how to appeal to a whole new fan base whilst respecting the audience that fell in love with the movies predecessors – As a movie spectacle Jurassic World is a popcorn munching wet dream, the film’s pace is electric, it’s cast full of energy & the film’s visuals are simply jaw dropping – the raptors have never looked so good, the futuristic theme park makes you want to visit there and once your eyes stare down on that Dino-Hybrid the Indominus Rex I guarantee the hairs on the back of your neck will stand to attention, wait for a minute then hide for cover

Jurassic World

Overall: Jurassic World is what every summer blockbuster should be – exhilarating, fist pumping fun that gives its audience a helluva ride – and with the welcome addition of John Williams spine tingling score, the many elegant nods to Spielberg’s original and its storyline paving the way for more sequels to follow makes this monster movie a nostalgic, heart thumping cinematic experience ★★★★½

Christopher Lee (1922-2015)

SAD NEWS the legendary Christopher Lee has died in hospital aged 93

I first became aware of Christopher Lee watching as a youngster them old Hammer Horror movies, sat there gripping a pillow or anything I could get my hands on, pulling it tight to my chest, my eyes squinting with my mouth agape waiting for this dark looming figure to appear out of the shadows, he was the master of the macabre, he used them deep vocals, that tall stature and them dark piercing eyes to great effect usually to scare the holy moly out of me – Lee was perfect in portraying the villain, that menacing screen presence of his allowed him much work in the 60’s and 70’s with characters such as Dracula, The Creature, Fu Manchu, Rasputin, Lord SummerIsle, and Scaramanga

Scaramanga

But remarkably when Christopher Lee reached his mid 70s instead of settling for his lot and basking in the glories of yesteryear his career saw a huge resurgence, spawning a new audience, Lee began the next and possibly most fruitful chapter of his career, teaming up with Tim Burton on 5 of his movies, George Lucas on two of his Star Wars movies playing the Evil Jedi Count Dooku and playing the wizard Saruman for Peter Jackson in Lord of the Rings – he was no longer only recognized for being Count Dracula but had a young fan base and one that he embraced with the grace of a champion

dooku

With a career that started back in the 1940’s and with over 200 movies under his belt it’s now time to say farewell to the Prince of Darkness

Thanks for the Nightmares Christopher Lee

Let me start by saying how much I loved Kyle Newman’s love letter to Star Wars the brilliant 2009 picture Fanboys, so obviously upon hearing Newman was involved in directing a new picture with a whole bunch of his acting mates on-board I was giddy with excitement.

Barely Lethal is one of them movies that could have & should have been so much better – I’m not saying Newman is out of his film making depth but presenting us with an action movie with little bite, characters that have no chemistry, music from Matteo Messina that’s just horrible & a picture that fails to get the best out of it’s talented cast does not help the arguement – maybe the film is a victim of previous and much better executed versions of teenagers trained to be assassins, kicking ass whilst balancing everyday life style of movies but whatever the excuses Kyle Newman has delivered a real stinker of a picture, lets hope his next effort (Chewie or the planned Fanboys sequel) is better and he does not wait for another six years to do either.

barely_lethal-2ee

Overall – In my opinion Barely Lethal should have committed to it’s darker, grittier premise, for me there should have been far less Mean Girl and much more Hit Girl – don’t get sucked in by it’s stellar star cast, Newman’s Barely Lethal is one big letdown, save your dollars and check it out when some TV channel shows it for free ★★½

Tomorrowland (2015) – Movie Review

tomorrowland1

A really good movie is not all about great story telling, or how mind blowing the stunning visuals are, it’s not even about how many awards that picture’s won or how much money the studio makes in filling them theatre halls – for me A Really Good Movie should only be judged on the movies overall enjoyment, it’s experience it gave you it’s viewer, did it bring a smile to your face?, make you all gooey inside? or brought tears trickling down your cheek? – we’re not all robots and each person’s idea of a good movie is different to the next, so do yourself a favor and don’t take the review of a so called movie critic as gospel – after all it’s only their own personal take on that movie.

My version of a really good movie is Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland from its exceptional cast that includes the dazzling Britt Robertson (Under the Dome) who excels in the female lead, the veteran George Clooney who is superb as the quirky inventor Frank Walker and last but not least in my opinion the best young actress since Jodie Foster Snow White and the Huntsman’s Raffey Cassidy who was born to play the authoritative yet charming Athena, such a great character ignited to the screen by this passionate young actress that oozes a magical screen presence.

tomorrowland2

Overall: Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland is bold, ambitious film-making that’s full of exciting ideas, great photography and most of all one of them rare movies that engages the whole family – it’s a film jam packed with fun, heart warming characters, colorful and jazzy sets along with a stirring, riveting soundtrack from The Incredibles Michael Giacchino – if you only see one movie this weekend then I’d highly recommend Tomorrowland it will make you smile and remind you of the classic Lucas and Spielberg movies of yesteryear ★★★★½

mad-max-fury-road

Only one place to watch George Miller’s latest insane action movie and that’s on the big screen – Miller’s fourth film in the franchise has a new leading man in Tom Hardy who replaces Mel Gibson who apparently dropped out after production issues a few years back – Hardy is a fine actor and a good choice as Max, he’s rugged & battle worn, a man troubled by his past, a survivor & one who will stop at nothing to get justice – Hardy’s Max maybe the title character but Millers picture delights on so many other levels from Nicolas Hoult giving a career best performance playing Nux the head shaved crazy rebel, the return of Hugh Keays-Byrne who played “Toecutter” in the original Mad Max back in 79′ and now plays a new villain known as Immortan Joe and last but not least Charlize Theron’s cool, complex and utterly badass Furiosa who just like Max is a broken, imperfect hero for a new dawn
fury
Another eye catching attribute to Fury Road is John Seale’s gorgeous cinematography, beautifully shot capturing the picture’s scale and blinding color all set to Miller’s familiar backdrop – it’s a truly mouthwatering experience
Overall: if your looking for pure cinematic escapism, with an adrenaline fueled pace & a film that’s bonkers from start to finish then check out MAD MAX FURY ROAD ★★★★½
