I have never met anybody who didn’t like at least one of the Rocky movies, from it’s exciting training montages, it’s thrilling music that accompanied each scene, the brilliant choreographed fight scenes and great cast led by the enigmatic Sylvester Stallone, the Rocky movies played such a huge part of my childhood and I still annually watch the box set to this day – so being a big fan and hearing of another chapter being told I was certainly pretty excited – here’s the new CREED trailer, it looks impressive, humble and really centers itself on the films main character Adonis Johnson played by Michael B. Jordan next seen playing Johnny Storm in the Fantastic 4 reboot
Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa. Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend

Grudge Match stars Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Kim Basinger, Alan Arkin, Kevin Hart & Jon Bernthal – From Peter Segal the director of 50 First Dates & Get Smart comes a sports comedy following a pair of aging & bitter Boxing rivals that are coaxed out of retirement for one final dance around the ring 30 years after their last match ended in controversy and resentment VERDICT I grew up watching these two acting heavy weight’s in the likes of Rocky and Raging Bull and was captivated by their performance in Copland so when it was announced that Stallone and De Niro would return to the ring and reunite for this movie I was quite excited – I wish I could be as enthusiastic about this review as I was taking my seat at the films recent screening – the film wasn’t as good as I had hoped for, the best bits seemed to have been shown in the trailer and although the onscreen sparring of two of my favorite actors was deliciously fun at times, a mediocre Rothman & Kelleher’s script, the annoying Kevin Hart who’s rubbish in pretty much everything I have seen and a pretty lack luster performance from Kim Basinger only helped the picture in becoming a lightweight affair – Grudge Match is not a bad movie but one that I had high hopes for and although I found myself enjoying certain aspects of the film like the movies many homages to Stallone’sRocky I still left the theater feeling slightly disappointed – overall if your after a break from the glut of serious & dramatic themed movies of late then Peter Segal’sGrudge Match may be what your after – it’s a far cry from being a knockout but I’m pretty sure you will be entertained and even leave the cinema with a little smile – stay after the credits for a couple of superb outtakes….
It was the year that Pixar Studios opened, Amber Heard was born and Sydney Pollack’sOut of Africa won a Best Picture at the 58th Academy Awards – it was also the year screen legend James Cagney died and Mike Tyson became the youngest Heavyweight World Champion in the history of Boxing – it was also the year two of my movie heroes starred opposite each other for the last time – Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster first appeared together in 1957’s Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and in 1986 they would star in their seventh & final movie together Tough Guys….
My Definitive Action Movies of 1986 : at Number 1 is James Cameron’s epic scifi movie ALIENS that sees Ripley alongside a group of kick-ass Colonial Marines trying to stay alive down on LV-426 – at Number 2 Maverick & Goose fly into Top Gun coming up against the best Fighter Pilots the navy has to offer – and at Number 3Sylvester Stallone plays Marion Cobretti a cop and part of the “Zombie Squad” who loves nothing better than Telling it to the Judge and putting the bad guys down in Cobra – at Number 4 is John Carpenter’s superb Big Trouble in Little China that sees Burton played by Kurt Russell battling a sorcerer named Lo Pan down in Chinatown – and finally there can be only one at Number 5 and that’s Russell Mulcahy’sHighlander don’t you just love that Queen soundtrack, that amazing Scottish backdrop and Clancy Brown’s villainous Kruger? – as you can see 1986 was an incredible feast of action movies, I was only 15 years of age at the time and my love affair with the movies was only just beginning….
This movie looks a blast – dubbed as Raging Bull vs Rocky – A pair of retired, aging boxing rivals are coaxed out of retirement to fight one last time — 30 years after their last match – here’s a group of retro style movie posters for Sylvester Stallone & Robert De Niro’s latest – Boxing Comedy GRUDGE MATCH…. Enjoy!!
Stallone & De Niro reunite after appearing together in 1997’s Cop Land – Peter Segal (Nutty Professor II: The Klumps & Anger Management) is on directing duties….
GRUDGE MATCH opens of Christmas Day stateside and 24th January in the UK
Cast Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel, Vinnie Jones, Amy Ryan, 50 Cent & Sam Neill – Ray Breslin (Stallone) is a former prosecutor and now owns a security firm specializing in testing how reliable maximum security prisons are in the country – Breslin takes the unusual steps by getting put away in these prisons and then attempting to break-out, in the process testing the prisons design, it’s security and how escape-proof that particular prison is – during a board meeting at his firm a CIA agent offers Breslin 5 Million Dollars for his services in breaking out of a top-secret prison, the prisons location must remain secret – Breslin agrees to the terms, gets himself captured and the next thing he knows is when he wakes up in his cell, a room that is part of a complex of cells with no outside windows, so Breslin is none the wiser to where he has placed and that’s when the fun really begins VERDICT this is what the movies are all about – popcorn flicks get no bigger than a feature film starring the best two action stars in the business – Swedish director Mikael Håfström known for his work on 1408 and The Rite handles this action flick superbly well, it’s got everything a cinematic ride should have – a delicious villain played by Jim Caviezel, an evil henchman Vinnie Jones, a quick tempo with some fun fight scenes and fabulous cheesy one liner’s that only Arnie and Sly could deliver – overall Escape Plan is brilliant entertainment and I just hope that these two action heroes don’t leave it too long before teaming up in a feature movie one more time….
Around the age of eleven I was like many kids my age discovering the world of the movies, my dad would bring home some videos and we would spend many a family evening watching some of the action movies I have grown to love and appreciate even more as the years go by – I remember the summer of 1985 and my first experience of a Stallone movie on the big screen, my uncle had taken me to see Rambo: First Blood Part II in the local town, and it’s a day I will cherish forever, it was my first taste of an action hero at the cinema – hearing the cheer of the crowd as one of my heroes did his thing was immense – I was only 14 that year and the effect Stallone and Arnie had on me growing up was huge, they were my first real action hero crushes, my fascination of all things MOVIE came from watching and being inspired by these two action stars – their haul of movies during the late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s included Rocky’s, Rambo’s, Terminators & Conan films, Commando, Red Sonja, Over the Top, Predator, Total Recall, Tango & Cash, Running Man, Cobra and many more – over the years these two cinematic giants have set the bar high in the Action Genre, their huge muscular physiques, magnificent screen presence and their ability to deliver delicious film quotes that were plentyful in the movie scripts of their day, have helped enhance both their repertoires making Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger the complete Action Hero Package that I doubt in my lifetime we shall see the like again…
