THEHEAT-BADASS

The Heat (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★

Stars Melissa McCarthy, Sandra Bullock, Demián Bichir and Marlon Wayans – from Paul Feig the director of Bridesmaids comes The Heat – following a straight & by-the-book FBI agent played by Bullock who has to work with a local Boston cop played by McCarthy to take down a local drug lord and his cronies VERDICT with a budget of around the $40 Million mark Paul Feig has once again hit box-office gold – from it’s 80’s style opening credits The Heat is a deliciously funny action movie that has more laugh out loud moments than many of the comedies released this year – it’s action packed, carries a superb soundtrack and along with it’s two leads is jam packed with quality actors filling it’s cast – of course some of the funniest movie scenes involve McCarthy who is at her cringeworthy best, she is at times outrageously out of control, like a stick of dynamite that is threatning to explode at any moment – not since Lethal Weapon have I witness two actors drip chemistry like McCarthy and Bullock they compliment each other perfectly and make the perfect pairing – overall The Heat is a wonderful female buddy cop movie that is refreshing in it’s crudeness and delightful in it’s rudeness…..

RUNNER-BADASS

Runner Runner (2013) – Movie Review ★★★

Stars Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton and Anthony Mackie – A Princeton student (Tiimberlake) gets cheated out of his college savings whilst betting on an online poker game & decides to track down Ivan Block (Affleck) who is the owner of the Online Betting Company to get his money back but instead gets lured into Block’s lifestyle a life of Women, Money & Corruption VERDICT Brad Furman’s movie is pretty predictable – the characters although performed well by Affleck & Timberlake lack any humanity and you feel nothing for either of them – in my opinion the picture should have been more aggressive with a darker tone but instead it ends up being a satisfying yet forgettable slice of cinema – overall I would wait for it’s DVD release and not waste your dollar at the box office…

PRISONERS-BADASS

Prisoners (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★½

Stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Maria Bello, Paul Dano, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo & Viola Davis – Keller Dover (Jackman) take his family over to his neighbors the Birch’s (Howard & Davis) to celebrate Thanksgiving, after dinner the families young daughters go out playing and as time ticks by it becomes apparent that the girls have gone missing – after calling the police a frantic search gets underway, but there’s still no sign of the two girls – Keller suspects a local simpleton who drives an RV & was last seen in the area where the girls disappeared, he doesn’t see much progress being made by Loki a police detective played by Gyllenhaal who’s on the case so decides to takes matters into his own hands VERDICT boy that was intense! a tough subject matter to portray on film and one that pulls at the heartstrings as you watch the parents struggle to come to terms with their daughters disappearance & the emotions they must be feeling at times making it difficult viewing – all credit to the cast and crew of making Prisoners such an engaging film experience. I really felt for all the characters from Hugh Jackman’s religious father who takes the law into his own hands, Paul Dano’s superb portrayal of the accused and Jake Gyllenhaal who is outstanding as Loki the officer trying to solve the case – the film’s location also deserves a mention, it’s dreariness, wet and darkly lit streets and the interior camera work of the houses that are seen throughout the picture lend to the overall tension that’s slowly building from movies opening scenes – overall this is an edge of the seat thriller, that will grind your fingernails to a pulp, it’s truly heart in the mouth stuff and one that you should not be missed on the big screen….

INSIDIOUS2-BADASS

Insidious : Chapter 2 (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★

Stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey, Danielle Bisutti & Ty Simpkins – continuing the woes of the Lambert family as they try to uncover the past in order to tackle the spirits that haunt them VERDICT James Wan’s sequel is pretty impressive, it’s shot on a lowish budget by Hollywood’s standards and it’s very scary – the movie also pays homage to some of the screens finest horror films including the likes of Poltergeist, The Shining and Psycho – Wan has once again demonstrated his eye for horror – taking the ghost story to a new level and showing that the modern horror film doesn’t need to have lots of blood and gore but can be delivered with a good story and genuine jumpy moments that come at you from all angles, Wan’s camera work is as good as any of his Horror Predecessors and his eye for a good cast that lends itself to the picture is spot on – in my humble opinion Insidious : Chapter 2 is slightly better than the first – I found the hairs on the back of my neck rising as Patrick Wilson character slowly transformed into the evil that was haunting him and Danielle Bisutti’s terrifying turn as the mother of Parker Crane was deliciously evil and her scenes are still giving me night terrors – overall this is a superior movie sequel that I would highly recommend but if your in any way squeamish or have a heart condition then stay away….

SWEETVENG-BADASS

Sweet Vengeance (Sweet Water) (2013) – Movie Review ★★★¾

Stars Ed Harris, January Jones, Jason Isaacs and Eduardo Noriega – sometime in the late 1800’s a lawman who is in search of two brothers gets tangled up with a sadistic, murdering preacher (Isaacs) and a woman looking for her husband (Jones) VERDICT I really love a good western and although Sweet Vengeance has it’s failings (mainly it’s poor script) the film is lot’s of fun and has some fabulous photography and is surprisingly funny at times – January Jones gives a career best performance – Jason Isaacs looks delicious as the murdering god fearing preacher and Ed Harris looks like he’s having a ball playing the bumbling stumbling Lawman who’s obviously slightly mad – overall this is no Unforgiven but it’s a solidly made western with some fun characters, plenty of sheep and a great shootout in the films last quarter…

THECALL-BADASS

The Call (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★

Stars Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Morris Chestnut & Michael Eklund – from director Brad Anderson (The Machinist) comes a thriller about a 9-1-1 operator (Berry) who takes the call from a serial killer’s victims just before they’re kidnapped and murdered VERDICT high on suspense Anderson’s gritty kidnap thriller The Call is up there amongst the best movies of the year – Breslin & Berry are superb in their respective roles but for me it’s Eklund who steals the show giving a chilling performance as the evil Michael Foster, his character epitomising the word “creepy & psychotic” – along with the actors mentioned above there’s also a neat little cameo by one of my favorite actors Michael Imperioli (Life On Mars) – overall this movie is worth the dollar at the box office and even though the films third act could have played out differently it was still pretty engaging with the non-stop, gripping tension continuing to the end credits!

Here’s a look at the latest film from Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke – described as a psycho-sexual thriller that stars Emily Browning, Thomas Dekker & Xavier Samuel – Hardwicke always seems to get bad press – most look at her work on Twilight and forget the hidden gem’s on her CV that include – 2003’s Thirteen and 2005’s Lords of Dogtown both deserving of more recognition and if you’ve not seen them already should be added to your movie watch list – as a fan of both Hardwicke and Browning Plush has me intrigued, I enjoyed the trailer and look forward to the movies release

kickass2

KICK-ASS 2 stars Chloë Moretz, Jim Carrey & Aaron Taylor Johnson – “Kick Ass” and a group of amateur Superheroes go into battle against the “Red Mist” aka: The Mother Fucker VERDICT this was a delight from start to finish, the introduction of new characters such as : Colonel Stars & Stripes & Mother Russia added some deliciously over the top fun to proceedings – in the directors chair sat Jeff Wadlow who’s last film was the impressive 2008 martial arts romp “Never Back Down” and boy does he do a good job – the action scenes are fast & furious and the outrageous blend of black humor & graphic violence are superbly executed – the film’s young cast lead by the deadly charm of Chloe Grace Moretz as “Hit Girl” look more experienced on screen making this overall a fun night at the flicks – KICK-ASS 2 is a movie sequel that in my opinion is better than its predecessor – role on number 3! ★★★★

Here’s a look at the new Robocop movie trailer that lands next year – the remake is being directed by Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) and stars Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish and Samuel L Jackson – must admit the trailer has whetted the appetite – not too sure about the suit, but I’m a big fan of Kinnaman (The Killing) and look forward to seeing the film on the big screen in February.

So looking forward to November when this movie lands on the big screen – it’s director Alan Taylor looks set to helm the new Terminator movie so the studio’s must be pretty pleased with what they’ve seen of The Dark World – was disappointed with Iron Man 3 so I’m hoping Marvel up their game for this Thor Sequel.

DARK TOURIST (also known as The Grief Tourist) stars Michael Cudlitz, Melanie Griffith & Pruitt Taylor Vince – Michael Cudlitz from TV’s “Southland” plays Jim a security guard who’s grim & morbid hobby is visiting places that tragedy or disaster has struck, his dark addiction takes him to Louisiana where he connects with a local mass murderer named Carl Marznap… VERDICT Suri Krishnamma’s DARK TOURIST draws obvious inspiration from the likes of as “Taxi Driver” and “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” to deliver a dark, upsetting & at times uncomfortable movie to watch – it’s lead Michael Cudlitz is utterly mesmerising, you watch with wide eyes as his character spirals into an abyss of obsession slowly loosing his grip on reality – along with Cudlitz there’s a small but effective turn by Melanie Griffith who plays Betsy a waitress who befriends Jim whilst serving him at the cafe she works – Krishnamma allows the film’s pace to be deliberately slow at times, this lends to the pictures terrifying nature, and allows the tension to build until its disturbing finale – hats off to all involved especially Cudlitz who deserves all the plaudits! ★★★★

Elysium (2013) – Movie Review

Elysium1

ELYSIUM stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley & William Fichtner – set in the future where two worlds exist, one called Elysium a man-made space station, thats self contained with it’s population living in luxury and the added bonus of a healthy lifestyle guaranteed – the other a broken Earth, over populated, disease ridden and full of mayhem and destruction – Max (Matt Damon) is an ex-parolee who lives in the latter, and is about to have a pretty bad few days, after a series of unfortunate events Max is left with no option but seek out his past & take on a mission, one that will have serious consequences for those living on both worlds…VERDICT a couple of reasons why I loved Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium – firstly Sharlto Copley’s villainous turn as Kruger a sleeper agent working for Elysium who is based on Earth does one hell of a job in frightening the holy crap out of anyone who gets in his way, sporting a full on beard, battle scarred and looking totally “don’t fuck with me” bad-ass, Kruger makes Anton from No Country For Old Men look like a pussy and don’t get me started on that wonderful, menacing South African accent – and secondly this is pure cinematic entertainment, a popcorn munching, thrill ride from one hell of a director and a cast that includes Damon, Foster and Fichtner all having fun with their respective roles – yes Elysium does have it’s flaws – the storyline is predictable and some of the characters seem thinly written but hell this is a summer blockbuster (this is not Schindler’s List) just sit back and enjoy the ride… it’s a good one! ★★★★
