LEE DANIEL’S THE BUTLER (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★
Cast – Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, John Cusack, Alan Rickman, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terence Howard, Jane Fonda, Lenny Kravitz and Robin Williams – The true story of Eugene Allen a man who served eight presidents during his time as a butler at the White House, he not only had to bring up a family during the racist trauma that occurred during the 50’s and 60’s but also contended with the civil rights movement, the war of Vietnam and other such events that happened during his lifetime – Eugene Allen’s name was changed in Lee Daniel’s movie to Cecil Gaines – VERDICT Being a big fan of Lee Daniel’s work that have included 2009’s Precious and last years superb The Paperboy I was excited to finally watch his latest movie The Butler – this was a heartbreaking but at times uplifting story of a man’s journey that started as a child working on the cotton fields, witnessing his dad being murdered and his mum raped to his life working in a hotel and then becoming a Butler in the White House – one of the things I love about a Lee Daniel’s picture is that he manages to not only tell a good story, that’s really engaging but his films are often surprisingly funny and are always extremely well acted – The Butler is no exception, there are some gut wrenching moments in the movie with scenes such as the one in the cafe with the black & white segregation areas, the aftermath of the assassination of JFK with his wife Jackie Kennedy sat alone in the White House with her clothes splattered with her husbands blood and the scary scenes of the fire bombing of a bus by the Ku Klux Klan these are all terrifying moments in our history that are captured superbly well by Lee Daniels – I also enjoyed the way Daniel’s showed us through the eye’s of Cecil Gaines each President he had served for, Cusack’s Nixon and Schreiber’s Johnson were my picks but they were all portrayed well, the movie at times reminding me of 94’s Forrest Gump – the performances of Forest Whitaker who played Gaines and his onscreen son played by David Oyelowo contributed greatly to making The Butler such an effective, compelling movie to watch, the relationship between the two often strained with Cecil not understanding his son’s actions until the films finale when he realized that his son was in fact the true hero for fighting for what he believed in and joined him on a protest – overall Lee Daniel’s The Butler is a powerful, moving and at times uplifting picture that deserves your attention – a must watch!!!!
ALAN PARTRIDGE (2013) – Movie Review ★★★¾
Cast – Steve Coogan, Anna Maxwell Martin, Sean Pertwee & Colm Meaney – When DJ Alan Partridge’s radio station is taken over and it’s name is changed, it’s everyman for himself as the threat of job loss looms and one of the DJ’s decides to take matters into his own hands by taking the station hostage VERDICT Alan Partridge is a character portrayed & created by British comedian Steve Coogan and although I have not seen much of the TV show I found myself enjoying Partridge’s big screen outing – yes the script is wafer thin and at times some of the jokes fell flat but more often than not I found myself giggling and squirming at the antics of the staff at Partridge’s Radio Station – some of the best scenes in the movie include moments when our DJ finds himself naked and locked out of the hostage taken Radio Station, the board meeting when Partridge meets the new owners and tries to impress upon them his worth to the company by sacking another staff member and the delightfully funny finale with Coogan and Meaney on the tour bus – overall Alan Partridge is one of the better comedies of 2013 – it’s a character I may consider watching more of in the future and a movie that I would highly recommend….
“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”
Academy Award winning actress JOAN FONTAINE has died aged 96 – Fontaine delivered some of her best work during the 40’s in classic movies such as Rebecca, Suspicion, The Constant Nymph, The Affairs of Susan and Letter from an Unknown Woman – She and her sister Olivia de Havilland are the first sisters to win Academy Awards and the first ones to be Oscar-nominated in the same year – I first came across the name Joan Fontaine whilst watching 1952’s Ivanhoe where she played Lady Rowena & instantly fell in love with this actress who was not only incredibly beautiful but also in my opinion ranks right up there alongside the likes of Katherine Hepburn, Olivia De Havilland, Bette Davis and Meryl Streep in some of the best actresses to grace the movie screen – If you’ve not seen the Hitchcock classics Rebecca and Suspicion then please do so, not only are they amongst Hitchcock’s finest work but the films leading lady delivers some memorable performances – thanks for the journey Ms Fontaine it’s been one swell ride….
Peter O’Toole the BAFTA winning actor of 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia has died aged 81 – in his long career O’Toole received 8 Academy Award nominations and starred in countless movies such as The Night of the Generals, Murphy’s War, Under Milk Wood, Man of La Mancha, Becket, Goodbye Mr Chips and The Lion in Winter – he also starred in 1984’s Supergirl and voiced the character Anton Ego in Pixar’s Ratatouille – I’m sure alongside his friends Richard Harris & Richard Burton the pearly gates of Heaven will be entertained this evening and the first drink will be raised in honor of a stage & movie legend….
FORCE OF EXECUTION – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★
Cast – Steven Segal, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames and Bren Foster – Steven Segal plays Mr. Alexander a crime kingpin who rules his empire of crime with honor and brutality – when a prison hit goes wrong Mr Alexander has to protect his empire against a villain known as The Iceman (Ving Rhames) and calls on his friends to help him overcome the odds – VERDICT Don’t go into these style of movies thinking you will have an Oscar winning script, some A-List acting and a big Hollywood size budget blown on special effects, these films are all about the fight scenes and Force of Execution thanks to the direction of Keoni Waxman and TaeKwon Do’s World Champ Bren Foster has some pretty impressive ones – Steven Segal still looks an imposing presence at the age 61 and the wonderful veterans Trejo and Rhames look to be enjoying themselves kicking some ass and looking good doing so – overall Force of Execution is a better than average martial arts flick that I enjoyed but would only recommend to those who enjoy this style of film – take it all with a pinch of salt and you will find yourself being entertained….
with all the hall marks of an 80’s kids adventure movie with hints of E.T., Super 8 and Chronicle Dave Green’s EARTH TO ECHO lands next April and looks pretty exciting – the film follows a group of young kids who uncover something magical & mysterious in the desert – that’s the first of our two new posters – the second is Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez’s film sequel SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR that stars the red hot Josh Brolin, Eva Green, Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt – having loved the original 2005 movie I’m pretty excited for this sequel – here’s the posters…. Enjoy!
OLDBOY – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★¾
Cast – Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L Jackson and Sharlto Copley – the film is a remake of Chan-wook Park’s 2003 Korean masterpiece directed by Malcolm X’s Spike Lee – the year is 1993 and Joe Doucett (Brolin) is a not a very nice guy, he’s a drunk and a father of a three year old he never visits – after a business meeting goes south Doucett get’s drunk and crawls through the neighborhood looking for someone to share his miserable insistence with – the next morning he wakes up in a strange bed, in a room that contains a shower and TV but no door or exit – it then dawns on Doucett that he has been kidnapped and locked in some kind of solitary confinement and there he spends the next 20 years of his life, writing letters of regret to his daughter and thinking of nothing else but seeking vengeance on his captors VERDICT let’s be honest Spike Lee was on a hiding to nothing when attempting to remake one of the finest Korean movies in decades – but in fairness Lee’s remake is a descent thriller that not only looks stylish but has some classy nods to it’s original and a performance by Josh Brolin that has you purring right to the end credits – my favorite scene in the movie has to be the devlishly fun, over the top fight scene with Brolin’s character facing down dozens of baddies – my only negative about Spike Lee’s remake is that if you have seen the original then you know the punchline and know when it’s coming so sadly that blow to the gut you may would have felt during the original movie is reduced to a slight whimper – overall OLDBOY is an enjoyable, extremely violent and well acted movie remake – it’s also Spike Lee’s best directed movie since 2006’s Inside Man and one I’d certainly recommend….
ENEMIES CLOSER – (2013/4) – Movie Review ★★★½
“Looks like you brought a knife to a gunfight”
Cast – Jean-Claude Van Damme, Orlando Jones and Tom Everett Scott – from Peter Hyams the director of Timecop, End of Days and Running Scared comes the latest action movie that stars the muscles from bruscles Enemies Closer – somewhere between the US/Canadian border a plane carrying a drug shipment crashes leaving a park ranger and a brother hell bent on revenge to work together and stop a ruthless drugs cartel from retrieving their prize shipment VERDICT I must confess to having a soft spot for Van Damme and his usually poorly written action movies that contain dreadful dialogue & cheesier than cheese one liners – one thing you can always say about the Belgian is that the majority of his action flicks seem to contain awesome fight scenes that even at the age of 53 he still manages to make look so easy – in Enemies Closer Van Damme plays Xander a vegan, gun tooting drug boss who’s wild hair doo and psychotic ramblings only add to his watchability and make him quite the villain – the film also includes good performances from Sleepy Hollow’s Orlando Jones playing the brother seeking revenge and Southland’s Tom Everett Scott mixing it up with Van Damme and not looking out of place doing so either – overall if your a fan of JCVD and this resurgence of yesteryear’s action stars then Enemies Closer will prove lot’s of cheer, with 80mins of low budget action fun, that’s not only solidly acted by it’s three main stars but is well directed by Peter Hyams a veteran of this arena….

THE FAMILY – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★¾
Cast – Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Dianna Agron, Domenick Lombardozzi and John D’Leo – The Family is the latest movie from Fifth Element & Leon director Luc Besson and is based on the novel Malavita : aka: Badfellas written by Tonino Benacquista – the film follows a Mafia family under the witness protection program who are relocated to Normandy, where they’re given a new identity and attempt to blend in to their new surroundings – but it’s not too long before chaos ensues after the crime kingpin tracking down The Family discover their new home VERDICT after discovering the wonderful Luc Besson in 88s The Big Blue and then in the mid 90s his epic Leon and The Fifth Element it’s been a pretty mediocre last ten years or so for this talented french director – but I’m happy to report that The Family is a return to form, the movie has a quick witted script and has some fun performances especially by Dianna Agron who gives her finest acting display to date playing the sexy, no nonsense daughter to Bob De Niro’s mob boss Giovanni Manzoni – Michelle Pfeiffer is also well worth the admission playing the bored housewife who like the rest of the family enjoys causing mayhem, her scene in the supermarket is fabulous with her facial expressions nailing the moment – another of my favorite scenes is when the mobsters come off the train in sleepy Normandy accompanied by the Gorillaz track Clint Eastwood it’s such a terrific moment with John D’Leo‘s character Warren watching on in awe and disbelief – overall The Family is a dark humored mobster flick that contains barrels of violence and some stylishly shot action scenes, the best of which are during the movies final quarter – The Family may not hit the standards of his early movies but Luc Besson has reminded us once more of his film-making qualities….
