With the brilliant Hatfields & McCoys, Man of Steel and next years Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit it seems Kevin Costner is back headlining the movie world once more and that makes me a happy man – in 3 Days to Kill he plays Ethan Runner a secret agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter whilst eliminating the bud guys – the film is directed by McG who’s credits include Charlie’s Angels, Terminator Salvation and We Are Marshall and starring alongside Costner is the gorgeous Amber Heard, the ultra talented Hailee Steinfeld and the Danish beauty Connie Nielsen – the film has a dark comic feel to it with Costner rocking the action scenes & Amber Heard looking deliciously sexy as always – check out the trailer…. Enjoy!

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★½

Cast – Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Kathryn Hahn, Adam Scott and Sean Penn – Walter Mitty (Stiller) is an employee at Life magazine the head of the negative assets department and has been for the last 16 years, he often daydreams of fantastic adventures and one day at work he receives some negatives from Photojournalist Sean O’Connell for what will be the last print of Life magazine – upon checking the package he discovers that negative 25 is missing and since Mitty has never lost a photo in all his time at the company he decides to go on a real adventure in search of Sean O’Connell and negative 25 VERDICT from them opening shots of Walter in front of his computer deliberating whether or not to send a work colleague he’s grown fond of a “wink” on the eHarmony site, to the beautiful scenery of Iceland & the Himalaya’s this is a picture directed by a more mature Ben Stiller who takes us an unforgettable, heartwarming & humorous film ride, whilst reminding us all that instead of dreaming about the possibilities we can all make things happen to get the most out of life – some of my favorite scenes in the movie include the ridiculously badass fight scene between Stiller’s Mitty and Scott’s Ted on the streets of New York and the really funny Benjamin Button scene that almost felt out of place but was hilarious nevertheless – the soundtrack to the movie also deserves a big mention, with Kristen Wigg’s acoustic rendition of Bowie’s Space Oddity still playing over in my mind and the classic Hall Oates track Maneater setting their respective scenes perfectly – overall The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is such a rare cinematic experience these days – it’s cinematography is beautiful, it’s context is touching and it’s message is inspiring – this is an incredibly bold and ambitious picture that I just simply adored….

Jonathan Sobol film The Art of the Steal has a pretty exciting cast that includes Kurt Russell (The Thing), Jay Baruchal (This is the End), Matt Dillon (Rumble Fish) and Terence Stamp (Superman) – the movie follows a motorcycle daredevil and a former art thief who assembles his old crew back for one last heist – in my book anytime Kurt Russell hits our screen’s with a new feature is something to get excited for – here’s the new trailer and some stills…. JOANFONTAINE-BADASS

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”

Academy Award winning actress JOAN FONTAINE has died aged 96 – Fontaine delivered some of her best work during the 40’s in classic movies such as Rebecca, Suspicion, The Constant Nymph, The Affairs of Susan and Letter from an Unknown Woman – She and her sister Olivia de Havilland are the first sisters to win Academy Awards and the first ones to be Oscar-nominated in the same year – I first came across the name Joan Fontaine whilst watching 1952’s Ivanhoe where she played Lady Rowena & instantly fell in love with this actress who was not only incredibly beautiful but also in my opinion ranks right up there alongside the likes of Katherine Hepburn, Olivia De Havilland, Bette Davis and Meryl Streep in some of the best actresses to grace the movie screen – If you’ve not seen the Hitchcock classics Rebecca and Suspicion then please do so, not only are they amongst Hitchcock’s finest work but the films leading lady delivers some memorable performances – thanks for the journey Ms Fontaine it’s been one swell ride….

PETEROTOOLE-BADASS

Peter O’Toole the BAFTA winning actor of 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia has died aged 81 – in his long career O’Toole received 8 Academy Award nominations and starred in countless movies such as The Night of the Generals, Murphy’s War, Under Milk Wood, Man of La Mancha, Becket, Goodbye Mr Chips and The Lion in Winter – he also starred in 1984’s Supergirl and voiced the character Anton Ego in Pixar’s Ratatouille – I’m sure alongside his friends Richard Harris & Richard Burton the pearly gates of Heaven will be entertained this evening and the first drink will be raised in honor of a stage & movie legend….

FORCE OF EXECUTION – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★

Cast – Steven Segal, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames and Bren Foster – Steven Segal plays Mr. Alexander a crime kingpin who rules his empire of crime with honor and brutality – when a prison hit goes wrong Mr Alexander has to protect his empire against a villain known as The Iceman (Ving Rhames) and calls on his friends to help him overcome the odds – VERDICT Don’t go into these style of movies thinking you will have an Oscar winning script, some A-List acting and a big Hollywood size budget blown on special effects, these films are all about the fight scenes and Force of Execution thanks to the direction of Keoni Waxman and TaeKwon Do’s World Champ Bren Foster has some pretty impressive ones – Steven Segal still looks an imposing presence at the age 61 and the wonderful veterans Trejo and Rhames look to be enjoying themselves kicking some ass and looking good doing so – overall Force of Execution is a better than average martial arts flick that I enjoyed but would only recommend to those who enjoy this style of film – take it all with a pinch of salt and you will find yourself being entertained….

CHARLIECOUNTRYMAN-BADASS

CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★

Cast – Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen, Rupert Grint & Til Schweiger – Charlie Countryman (LaBeouf) gets visited by his recently deceased mum who tells him to visit Bucharest – on the plane trip over, he gets chatting to an elderly man who suddenly passes away in the seat next to him & upon his death the man asks Charlie to visit his daughter Gabi & deliver a present. Charlie meets Gabi and instantly falls in love with her, unbeknown to him she is the wife of Nigel, a Romanian mobster and someone you just don’t want in your life. VERDICT from first time helmer Fredrik Bond comes one of the surprise movies of the year – Charlie Countryman is a delightfully quriky drama, with hints of comedy, romance and brutal violence – the acting throughout is top draw with Shia LaBeouf and Evan Rachel Wood both owning the screen with some crazy chemistry – Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint gives a rather hilarious turn as Karl a wannabe porn star going under the name Boris Pecker who takes 6 Viagras and ends up in deep shit with a Romanian club owner and Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen looks every bit the nasty bit of work he portrays in the movie – overall Charlie Countryman has hints of True Romance with the trippy-ness of Spring Breakers – it’s a love story, with a violent and ultimately satisfying finale that includes some gorgeous cinematography and a vibrant soundtrack – if your looking for something altogether different from your comic-book superhero movies then Fredrik Bond’s little picture might just be for you….

THEHOBBIT2-BADASS

THE HOBBIT : THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★½

Cast – Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, Evangeline Lilly and Orlando Bloom – from Peter Jackson the director of The Lord of the Rings comes the second part to his Hobbit trilogy – Bilbo, Thorin and company must first encounter the perils that lay in wait in the darkness of Mirkwood Forest and the human settlement of Lake-town, before continuing on their quest towards the Lonely Mountain that’s filled with Gold, Jewels and a sleeping Dragon VERDICT being a huge Tolkien fan and having read The Hobbit many times since childhood I must confess to originally being quite annoyed at Peter Jackson’s decision to not only incorporate a new character Tauriel (Lilly) into Tolkien’s world but also to include The Lord of the Rings veteran Legolas (Bloom) who never appeared in the novel – but why should I have doubted Peter Jackson & his writer Fran Walsh who have both proved themselves masters of Middle Earth? These inclusions not only allow the story to be fleshed out a little but their presence adds to some of the most breathtaking action scenes we have seen in Middle Earth, Tauriel and Legolas leading the charge against The Spiders of Mirkwood and the battles with their sworn enemies the Orcs is fantastic and so much fun to watch – also the unlikely and potentially frowned upon friendship between the Elf Tauriel and Kili the Dwarf is an engaging, quite touching at times sub plot, that adds to an already engrossing story – overall The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug is a truly amazing spectacle and one of the very best movies of 2013 – the scenes with Gandalf at the ruins of Dol Guldur, the capture by the Mirkwood Forest Spiders and of course the impressive Smaug (possibly the best movie Dragon ever) are hugely impressive, the film’s 3D adds so much depth to these scenes that you find yourself being submerged into that world as if you too are part of the action – there’s also some real convincing performances on show including Lee Pace’s Elven King Thranduil and Luke Evan’s Bard the Bowman both adding some steel and a great deal of quality to an already fabulous cast – the movie contains so many great scenes but my favorite has to be when the Dwarves escape the Elven kingdom in empty wine barrels, floating down the river whilst being attacked by rampaging Orcs – it’s just sublime! – The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug is another example of the greatness of Peter Jackson – not many living filmmakers have that cinematic wow factor but Jackson has it in spades, this film is an epic of our time and I’m already shaking with excitement counting down the days to The Hobbit: There and Back Again the final chapter that lands late next year….

ELEANORPARKER-BADASS

known as the “Woman of a Thousand Faces” Eleanor Parker has died aged 91 at her home in Palm Springs, California – although most remember Ms Parker for her superb portrayal of The Baroness in 1965’s The Sound of Music, it was earlier in her career at the start of the 50’s that she really made a name for herself, playing a teenager in Cromwell’s prison drama Caged, starring alongside Kirk Douglas in Detective Story and playing opera singer Marjorie Lawrence in 1955’s Interrupted Melody all three performances delivering Ms Parker an Academy Award Nomination – another couple of personal favorite’s was the John Sturges western Escape from Fort Bravo showing great chemistry alongside William Holden and Otto Preminger’s 1955 Frank Sinatra led movie The Man with the Golden Arm – she was one of the true greats of the silver screen, a fabulous actress with the looks of a Princess – she will be sadly missed….
