ACTION86-BADASS

It was the year that Pixar Studios opened, Amber Heard was born and Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa won a Best Picture at the 58th Academy Awards – it was also the year screen legend James Cagney died and Mike Tyson became the youngest Heavyweight World Champion in the history of Boxing – it was also the year two of my movie heroes starred opposite each other for the last time – Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster first appeared together in 1957’s Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and in 1986 they would star in their seventh & final movie together Tough Guys….

My Definitive Action Movies of 1986 : at Number 1 is James Cameron’s epic scifi movie ALIENS that sees Ripley alongside a group of kick-ass Colonial Marines trying to stay alive down on LV-426 – at Number 2 Maverick & Goose fly into Top Gun coming up against the best Fighter Pilots the navy has to offer – and at Number 3 Sylvester Stallone plays Marion Cobretti a cop and part of the “Zombie Squad” who loves nothing better than Telling it to the Judge and putting the bad guys down in Cobra – at Number 4 is John Carpenter’s superb Big Trouble in Little China that sees Burton played by Kurt Russell battling a sorcerer named Lo Pan down in Chinatown – and finally there can be only one at Number 5 and that’s Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander don’t you just love that Queen soundtrack, that amazing Scottish backdrop and Clancy Brown’s villainous Kruger? – as you can see 1986 was an incredible feast of action movies, I was only 15 years of age at the time and my love affair with the movies was only just beginning….

CATCHINGFIRE-BADASS

THE HUNGER GAMES : CATCHING FIRE – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★

Cast – Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Jena Malone, Donald Sutherland, Philip Seymour Hoffman & Sam Claflin – Catching Fire starts with Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark preparing for their victory tour throughout the country – President Snow is growing suspicious of Katniss’s true feelings for Peeta and wants her eliminated, blaming her for the recent uprising in the districts and the announcement of Panem’s third Quarter Quell, a special version of the Games held every 25yrs throws Katniss & Peeta back in the arena where survival at all costs is top of the agenda VERDICT – with I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence on-board for the sequel to 2012’s The Hunger Games and a group of actors more familiar with their surroundings and current status amongst Hollywood’s elite, Catching Fire entered rare territory by becoming a movie sequel that’s far superior to it’s original – everything from the film’s sets, the film’s urgency and the exhilarating action were far superior to the first movie – especially the District 12 sets, the poison mist and the Monkey Mutts chase scene were breathtaking – hats off to some of the newcomers to the franchise, my favorites being Jena Malone’s Johanna, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Heavensbee & Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair all playing pivotal roles and shining when the spotlight was on – overall THE HUNGER GAMES : CATCHING FIRE does fine justice to the world created by Suzanne Collins and surpassed any expectations I had going into the theater – the third and final book is being adapted over two movies the first of which lands late 2014 and if Catching Fire hasn’t whet the appetite for what’s to come then the cannon must have sounded and your dead somewhere ready to be craned off to the Capitol….

SABOTAGE-BADASS

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Breacher a DEA agent who’s team has been targeted by a mysterious assassin in David Ayer’s SABOTAGE – judging by this trailer, the pretty awesome cast and Ayer’s previous movies that include Street Kings, Harsh Times & End of Watch SABOTAGE looks one hell of a ride and has my action juices flowing quicker than Niagra Falls

SABOTAGE2-BADASS

The Sabotage cast also includes: Mireille Enos (The Killing), Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Terrence Howard (Iron Man), Josh Holloway (Lost), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Max Martini (Pacific Rim) and Olivia Williams (Sixth Sense) – Here’s the action packed trailer…. Enjoy!

HOURS-BADASS

HOURS – (2013/4) – Movie Review ★★★¾

Cast – Paul Walker, Génesis Rodríguez – set in 2005 during the time Hurricane Katrina was raining havoc down on New Orleans – Nolan (Walker) has just become a father to a newly born baby who is prematurely born & is placed in an incubator to help with her breathing – then the storm hits placing the hospital on high alert, the hospital’s power goes off, the flooding begins and then the criminal, looting scum come out to play – Nolan must do whatever it takes to keep himself and his new baby girl alive VERDICT Eric Heisserer who’s writing credits include the recent remakes of A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Thing makes his directorial debut with Hours – unlike other Paul Walker features this movie does not include a car instead it’s completely set in a hospital and requires Walker to step up to the plate and deliver some of his finest acting work to date – the scenes in the hospital with the corridor full of bodies left on the floor and the moments Nolan attempts to communicate with his new born by placing pictures of him & his wife on the incubator glass are quite emotional – overall Heisserer‘s Hours is a gripping, well shot and superbly executed movie that may get overlooked due to people’s preconceived ideas about it’s leading star – in my opinion Hours is well worth a watch….

PERCYJACKSON-BADASS

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★

Cast – Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Leven Rambin & Nathan Fillion – Percy (Lerman) the son of Poseidon & his friends embark on a quest to the Sea of Monsters where he hopes to find the Golden Fleece that can restore the ailing magical tree that protects their home from evil foes VERDICT being a big fan of all things fantasy and enjoying Chris Columbus’s first movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief I was hoping for more of the same from Thor Freundenthal’s sequel – the real trouble with Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is that the whole film is too effects driven, I almost felt a CG overload and a lot of the effects were cheesy & made the production look cheap – I’m always one for effects as long as the storyline is good and that the characters in that particular world have some emotion, but to be honest I felt nothing for any of the characters in the movie, it appears that the team behind Sea of Monsters concentrated on the CG work rather that the story and characterization – the premise for the story centered around the mythical Golden Fleece was a promising but ultimately wasted one, even the villain Kronos was a huge let down – overall Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters gets the big thumbs down here, which is a shame as I loved the first film – my advice for the third outing would be to hire some director of note who can re-establish this franchise as worthwhile and get somebody better than Green Lantern’s Marc Guggenheim to write the script….

JODIEFOSTER-BADASS

Who would have imagined from them early days playing characters such as Tallulah in Alan Parker’s Bugsy Malone or Iris in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver that this young lady born on this day in 1962 would have become a screen legend and bagged 2 Academy Awards for Best Actress and countless other awards in the process? – It was 12yrs after her brilliant role in Taxi Driver that Jodie Foster delivered one of the best performances of her career as Sarah Tobias who is brutally raped in Kaplan’s The Accused them opening scenes in the bar were pretty horrific, this film sits at number 3 on my Essential Jodie Foster – at number 2 is one of my favorite films of 1997 Robert Zemeckis’s scifi movie Contact starring alongside Matthew McConaughey & William Fichtner – and at number 1 is The Silence of the Lambs playing F.B.I. agent Clarice Starling attempting to catch a serial killer with the help of psychopath Dr. Hannibal Lecter played wonderfully well by Anthony Hopkins, the relationship between Foster & Hopkins is what gave this film it’s bite, them scenes with Clarice trying to gain Lecter’s trust are compelling viewing – the film went on to win the Top 5 Academy Awards – Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay – now I have named my Essential Jodie Foster it’s only fair to mention the one’s that just missed out but still rank high on her CV : i must confess to having a soft spot for the wonderful Maverick (with Mel Gibson) Jodie looked amazing in this movie and the chemistry between the two is beautiful to watch – Catchfire (with Dennis Hopper) this movie usually gets panned but I really enjoyed it, the film was also directed by Hopper – and David Fincher’s 2002 home invasion movie Panic Room (with Kristen Stewart) such a gripping thriller with a wonderful cast and shot by the the master Fincher….

Getaway – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★½

Cast – Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez and Jon Voight – Brent Magna (Hawke) is a former racing driver who arrives home one night to discover his wife has been kidnapped and in order to get her back he’s instructed to commandeer a custom made mustang and take it on a path of destruction around the streets of Sofia VERDICT don’t go into this movie with any pre-conceived ideas, think of it as a popcorn movie, that’s not going to require much brain power and you will be pleasantly surprised – Courtney Solomon who helmed Dungeons & Dragons back in 2000 really does know how to orchestrate a car chase, the scenes with the mustang driving through the Christmas market and the bike chase scene are electric & superbly filmed – overall Getaway doesn’t set out to win any awards or stretch the acting talent in anyway but instead delivers 90mins of mindless, heart pumping, unadulterated fun!!

SCORSESE-BADASS

Not many filmmakers have spanned the decades quite like Martin Scorsese, it was the late 80’s that I first watched his classic, gritty drama 1973’s Mean Streets and since then have watched pretty much everything this New Yorker has set to film, from his early collaborations with De Niro and Keitel in the mid 70s early 80s to this centuries dynamic pairing with DiCaprio, Scorsese is truly one of cinema’s finest Movie Directors – he has received 7 Academy Award Nominations for Best Director (winning for 2006’s The Departed) and in 2010 he was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award – below is what we think are his TOP 10 MOVIES Behind the Camera

SCORSESE-BADASS2

Our number 1 choice is 1990’s Goodfellas that stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci who went on to win an Oscar for his colorful portrayal of Tommy “What do you mean I’m funny?” Devito, the film is the best gangster movie I’ve ever seen and in my opinion the crown jewels on Martin Scorsese’s incredible CV – following close behind is the electric Taxi Driver, the brutal Gangs of the New York and boxing drama Raging Bull – at number 5 is the Howard Hughes tale The Aviator and at number 6 De Niro re-teams with Joe Pesci for the epic mobster, gambling drama Casino – at number 7 is the return of the hustler in 1986’s The Color of Money that’s followed by a trip down the streets of Little Italy in Mean Streets and the uncompromising movie remake of Cape Fear – finally at number 10 sees Daniel Day Lewis in 19th Century New York in The Age of Innocence

Martin Scorsese was born on this day in 1942 in Queens, New York – his latest movie is The Wolf of Wall Street that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and lands Christmas in the US and early next year internationally….

HOW I LIVE NOW – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★¾

Cast – Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, George MacKay and Harley Bird – Based on the award winning novel by Meg Rosoff – Daisy (Ronan) an American is sent to the English countryside to stay with family when a terrorist attack strikes, leaving her and her cousins fighting for survival VERDICT since watching Saoirse Ronan in 2007’s Atonement I have been a big fan, it’s amazing to think she’s only 19yrs of age and has already giving us some pretty impressive performances in films such as The Lovely Bones, Hanna, Violet & Daisy, Byzantium and her latest Kevin Mcdonald’s How I Live Now – a nuclear terrorist attack is hopefully something we never have to go through – the film’s big moment is when the cousins are out swimming and enjoying the countryside, there’s a deathly silence, almost a tremor and then that’s when the ash starts descending down upon them like flurries of snow – they make it back to their cottage and within minutes the electric goes off, their world is about to be turned upside down – Mcdonald captures all of this on film with a certain beauty but still manages to be aggressive with the narrative, the realism and brutality of what’s happened is there for you to see – Saoirse Ronan and young Harley Bird are both superb, the scenes of them on the run, being chased in the woods and that haunting moment at the boys camp are film highlights – overall How I Live Now is a heart wrenching tale of love and war, that’s engrossing, has a superb soundtrack and some young talent that I’m sure will be see in movies for years to come….

MACHETE KILLS – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★¾

Cast – Danny Trejo, Mel Gibson, Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez, Alexa Vega, Demian Bichir, Jessica Alba, Charlie Sheen & Sofia Vergara – our hero Machete (Trejo) is hired by the President of the United States (Sheen) to bring down the evil Mendez (Bichir) who has a Rocket pointing at Washington VERDICT since Machete’s introduction in 2001’s Spy Kids, the character has made appearances in 5 other features, they include Spy Kids 2 + 3, Planet Terror, Machete and of course Machete Kills – I love these Grindhouse style movies and Rodriguez is the master of the format, his cocktail of insane over-the-top violence, exploding bodies with decapitation a high priority, plenty of cleavage shots and his knack of finding the most wacky but brilliant weapons ever seen on a movie screen are just some of the reasons that make a Rodriguez movie a must see – overall Machete Kills is an exciting sequel with so many superb tongue in cheek performances, Demian Bichir (The Bridge) demonstrates his acting madness, laughing wide eyed like a deranged Hyena playing the villainous Mendez, Charlie Sheen is winning again playing President Rathcock, whilst Lethal Weapon’s Mel Gibson is funny as hell camping it up playing Luther Voz, a Star Wars fan and master villain, whose aim is to rebuild society in space after helping to wipe out Earth – and it’s not just the boys who have all the fun one of the highlights of the film is a terrific showdown between Luz (Rodriguez) & Miss San Antonio (Heard) that’s hotter than hell and full of delicious one-liners & some great fisticuffs – Machete Kills is pure cinematic indulgence, a film that will leave you smiling like a Cheshire Cat and rubbing your hands in excitement for Machete’s next outing….
