Here’s two pretty Badass movie posters from upcoming action flicks that I’m excited to watch on the big screen – after it’s horrible 1998 version it’s down to British filmmaker Gareth Edwards (Monsters) to send GODZILLA back to it’s rightful place amongst the “King of all Monsters” – then we have the first of many movie posters (I’m sure) from Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY directed by James Gunn – the film pitts Peter Quill and his band of merry outlaws against the evil and villainous Ronan – take a peek…. Enjoy!

Guardians of the Galaxy – US (1st August) – UK (1st August) – Australia (N/A)
RAZE (2013/4) – Movie Review ★★★★
Raze stars Zoë Bell, Rachel Nichols, Sherilyn Fenn, Tracie Thoms, Bailey Anne Borders & Rosario Dawson – this movie is one hell of a kick-ass ride – it follows two abducted women & 50 other women who are forced to entertain some rich & privileged guests by fighting each other to the death using their bare hands – VERDICT damn this movie was brutal & intense! from them opening scenes of Jamie played by Continuum star Rachel Niccols obviously drugged, waking in a cell then stumbling her way through some darkly lit tunnels until she comes face to face with Zoe Bell’s Sabrina who she has to fight to survive is spectacular and relentless stuff – RAZE is a low-budget thrill ride from Josh C Waller who’s making his directorial debut – the film’s score is atmospheric giving it an overall feel like a scary-ass first person shoot-em, the fight scenes that are quite horrific and realistic mostly take place inside a circular dirt-floored pit that’s contained within a dungeonlike labyrinth of tunnels and prison rooms that are home to the women captives – although the movie has a weak and somewhat familiar storyline it’s mystery of who’s running the show keeps you on the edge of your seat – overall RAZE is an explosive, entertaining action packed movie that will have you feeling like a punchbag after it’s exhausting 85mins….
Whenever I see a cool movie montage I get chills up and down my spine and wish the day was long enough to watch them all one after the other – this 2mins clip of the classic movies of yesteryear is not quite long enough but gives you a small taste of what MGM has given us all over the years, so many memories and so many wonderful pictures – take a look at the video below & whilst your enjoying the clip wish MGM a Happy 90th Birthday!!!
Here’s two new posters – firstly on the left Joe Lynch’s KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM a film that follows some live-action role players who manage to conjure up a badass demon from Hell and they must deal with the consequences – the film stars Ryan Kwanten, Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau and Steve Zahn and has a January 21st release date in the US – the second poster comes from the big screen adaption of VERONICA MARS with Veronica back in her home town lending a helping hand to friend Logan Echolls – looks like Rob Thomas the director and creator has managed to bring back most of the cast from the TV Show including Kristen Bell, Gaby Hoffmann, Ryan Hansen, Jason Dohring & Francis Capra – Veronica Mars hits our screens Mid March
AMERICAN HUSTLE (2013/4) – Movie Review ★★★★
American Hustle stars Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner & Robert De Niro – Originally titled American Bullshit comes a story about a con man, Irving Rosenfeld (Bale), and his sexy, seductive partner Sydney Prosser (Adams) who are forced into working for the FBI by a wild agent named Richie DiMaso (Copper) who wants to bring down corrupt politicians – this threesome becomes more messed up when Rosenfeld’s unpredictable, fun loving wife Rosalyn played by Jennifer Lawrence gets involved – VERDICT yet another wonderful picture from David O Russell the director of I Heart Huckabees, The Fighter & Silver Linings Playbook – his latest American Hustle is a delicious cocktail of dark humor & captivating performances from the likes of Bradley Cooper who deserves Oscar Recognition for his take on Richie DiMaso the wacky, tacky ambitious FBI agent who’s obsessed in taking down the corrupt, the beautiful Amy Adams who’s raw aggressive acting & revealing dress wear is mesmerizing and Christian Bale brings his A game to the party with a performance so good that it pulls you into you the character he’s playing and never lets you go he’s outstanding – it must also be said the marvelous sets & costume designs are pretty impressive giving the 70s era New Jersey a fantastic look adding to the vibe of the picture – Jennifer Lawrence gives yet another superb performance playing Bale’s wife, Michael Peña is delightful playing Sheik Abdullah and Robert De Niro pops up in a small role playing a mafia boss – overall David O Russell’s American Hustle is an exciting, smart and original picture that’s not quite to the standards of Silver Lining but a fabulous cinematic romp nevertheless – I would be very surprised if American Hustle didn’t feature heavily at this years Academy Awards – wonderful, electric & utterly brilliant!….
SAVING MR. BANKS (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★½
SAVING MR. BANKS stars Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Ruth Wilson, Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman & Bradley Whitford – Director John Lee Hancock brings us the story of Author P. L. Travers that not only reflects on her childhood spent with a loving, caring but alcoholic father but also looks at the many trials and tribulations filmmaker Walt Disney had in securing the rights to Ms Travers beloved character MARY POPPINS and the process in bringing it all to the screen VERDICT I’ve yet to meet anybody who dislikes Robert Stevenson’s Mary Poppins and watching SAVING MR. BANKS sorted of acted as a behind the scenes glimpse at want went on back in the 60’s of this much loved Disney Classic – Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are both outstanding as Disney & Travers respectively but it’s easy to overlook two other towering performances from Colin Farrell playing the drunk but loving father Travers Goff who you get to meet in various flashback in Australia in the early 1900’s, it’s a deliverance of such a role that makes me believe Farrell is right up their amongst the elite in his field and then there’s Paul Giamatti who plays the delightful Ralph a limousine driver who strikes an unlikely friendship with Travers whilst driving her around LA – Hancock and his team manage to capture the era of the time perfectly, it’s cinematography is delivered with stunning beauty and them familiar, chirpy tunes from 64’s Mary Poppins are introduced throughout the movie and delivered wonderfully well by the Sherman Brothers who are played so so well by Jason Schwartzman & B.J Novak – my favorite scene in the movie has to be Travers singing and dancing along to “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”, it’s pretty emotional and nailed by the cast – overall SAVING MR. BANKS is a delicious feast of family entertainment that will make you look at Mary Poppins in a different way but love it even more….
OUT OF THE FURNACE (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★
Cast: Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe & Sam Shepard – When Rodney (Affleck) disappears and the local law doesn’t do enough to find him it’s left to his older brother Russell (Bale) to takes matters into his own hands to find justice VERDICT Scott Cooper’s directorial debut Crazy Heart was a pretty average affair lit up by a fabulous Jeff Bridges performance but his second feature behind the camera OUT OF THE FURNACE is a powerful, mood driven picture set in and around the Blue Collar Rust Belt containing some Cracker Jack performances, a haunting soundtrack but most of all the brutal reality you feel whilst watching these two brothers who have not only combated war & prison but have had to contend with everyday life, struggling by in the gritty harshness of a small steel town – the acting is one of a master class with Christian Bale giving a sublime display of the wiser older sibling, Casey Affleck plays the younger brother visibly damaged by his time in the war who gets sucked into the underground fight scene to settle his debts, it’s a quite heartbreaking performance and easily his best onscreen display since 2010’s The Killer Inside Me and then we have Woody Harrelson playing to perfection the uncompromising, despicable hillbilly drug lord who’s character is such a far cry from that of Haymitch in The Hunger Games – overall from them opening scenes at the drive-in movie theater, the to the dingy underground fight clubs OUT OF THE FURNACE is an underrated, riveting piece of cinema that should not be missed!!!
CLOSED CIRCUIT (2013) – Movie Review ★★★
Cast – Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciaran Hinds, Julia Stiles & Jim Broadbent – the film starts with an explosion in a crowded London market thought to be from a terrorist attack – it’s not long after before the police arrest Farroukh Erdogan as the prime suspect and the mastermind of the attack – Two Lawyers Martin Rose (Bana) and Claudia Simmons-Howe (Hall) who both carry personal baggage of their own are both recruited by the British Attorney General to represent Farroukh in the court of law, but as both lawyers delve deeper into the bombing they discover shocking discoveries and a web of intrigue, secrecy and cold blooded murder VERDICT as terrorism, political & courtroom thrillers go this is a pretty average affair, with some very good actors caught up in a pretty miserably slow-burning storyline that collapses into a heap of tiresome cat & mouse chase scenes with the London backdrop sadly underused – overall Closed Circuit is not the worst movie you will see this year but considering it’s cast, it’s screenplay by the usually reliable Steven Knight (Eastern Promises & Dirty Pretty Things) and a young director in John Crowley who’s directorial credits include the superb 2007 Boy A then you would be right in expecting something more than this average, at times yawn-fest of a movie….
With the brilliant Hatfields & McCoys, Man of Steel and next years Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit it seems Kevin Costner is back headlining the movie world once more and that makes me a happy man – in 3 Days to Kill he plays Ethan Runner a secret agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter whilst eliminating the bud guys – the film is directed by McG who’s credits include Charlie’s Angels, Terminator Salvation and We Are Marshall and starring alongside Costner is the gorgeous Amber Heard, the ultra talented Hailee Steinfeld and the Danish beauty Connie Nielsen – the film has a dark comic feel to it with Costner rocking the action scenes & Amber Heard looking deliciously sexy as always – check out the trailer…. Enjoy!
SCENIC ROUTE – (2013) – Movie Review ★★★★
Cast – Josh Duhamel & Dan Fogler – from the directing duo of Kevin and Michael Goetz Scenic Route follows two friends, Mitchell (Duhamel) and Carter (Fogler) on a road trip through Death Valley – when Carter orchestrates a breakdown and attacks some of Mitchell’s life choices their friendship gets seriously tested and things slowly start to spiral out of control VERDICT having not read any publicity or watched the trailer to Scenic Route I went into the movie not knowing what to expect, yes I’d seen Duhamel in Transformers and some rom-coms and laughed at Fogler in comedies such as Fanboys and Balls of Fury but paired together in a psychological thriller directed by two relitavely unknown’s Kevin & Michael Goetz a couple of filmmakers who’s only other venture behind the camera was 1998’s independent short Mass Transit – surely this film was doomed for failure? – thankfully my negative thoughts were turned to positive within the first 30mins, along with the beautifully shot exteriors and Kyle Killen’s gripping story the real success of Scenic Route was the electrifying chemistry between the films two leads, it was like watching two actors plying their trade on the Broadway stage, pummeling each other, getting under each other’s skin and finally breaking down – it was at times a very dark, emotional and brutally gripping 87 minutes – overall this under the radar thriller is one of the best of it’s kind & deserves your viewing – hopefully it won’t be too long before we’re treated to the next movie by Kevin & Michael Goetz….
First up here’s a movie poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2 that lands next year, with vocals from the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill and Gerard Butler – the films are loosely based on the series of books by Cressida Cowell and is once again directed by Dean DeBlois – the second poster is for Blue Sky’s Rio 2 and continues the journey of Blu & Jewel – vocals include Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway & Jamie Foxx – the film will be the last of writer Don Rhymer who sadly died last year!
How to Train Your Dragon 2 – US (13th June) – UK (4th July) – Australia (10th July)
Rio 2 – US (11 April) – UK (4th April) – Australia (10th April)
It was the year that Pixar Studios opened, Amber Heard was born and Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa won a Best Picture at the 58th Academy Awards – it was also the year screen legend James Cagney died and Mike Tyson became the youngest Heavyweight World Champion in the history of Boxing – it was also the year two of my movie heroes starred opposite each other for the last time – Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster first appeared together in 1957’s Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and in 1986 they would star in their seventh & final movie together Tough Guys….
My Definitive Action Movies of 1986 : at Number 1 is James Cameron’s epic scifi movie ALIENS that sees Ripley alongside a group of kick-ass Colonial Marines trying to stay alive down on LV-426 – at Number 2 Maverick & Goose fly into Top Gun coming up against the best Fighter Pilots the navy has to offer – and at Number 3 Sylvester Stallone plays Marion Cobretti a cop and part of the “Zombie Squad” who loves nothing better than Telling it to the Judge and putting the bad guys down in Cobra – at Number 4 is John Carpenter’s superb Big Trouble in Little China that sees Burton played by Kurt Russell battling a sorcerer named Lo Pan down in Chinatown – and finally there can be only one at Number 5 and that’s Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander don’t you just love that Queen soundtrack, that amazing Scottish backdrop and Clancy Brown’s villainous Kruger? – as you can see 1986 was an incredible feast of action movies, I was only 15 years of age at the time and my love affair with the movies was only just beginning….
Since I started collecting movies back around the age of fifteen (1986) I became fascinated by the Horror Genre, I loved watching the Hammer House of Horror films and started watching Hardcore Horror (well it was back then) from the likes of Fulci, Bava, Argento, Carpenter, Craven, Hooper and Romero these guys for me were the bees knees, the majority of their films have aged will and still terrify to this day – looking around at the modern crop of filmmakers I wonder how many of them truly stand out and make you white with fright or scare you enough to keep the lights on at bedtime? In recent years too many of the Horror Past Masters have turned to mediocre material to ignite their horror spark and have failed miserably – Wes Craven the guy who brought us Freddy Krueger in the early 80’s and who in 1996 re-invented the horror genre with his slasher flick SCREAM is one such example, his recent films Cursed, Red Eye, My Soul to Take and Scream 4 have been average at best and sadly the same can be said about Argento and Carpenter their movies in the late 70s and 80s are some of the best of the genre but in recent years it’s been a downhill slide – so WHO amongst the modern filmmakers are impressing in the scare department?

Over the last ten years my horror taste-buds have being actively looking for new exciting talent, filmmakers that can scare me, turn me on and elevate my heart rate to the point of explosion – during this period I have come up with 6 exciting movie directors, each with their own unique style and approach to the horror genre and each one of them at some point have managed to scare the bejesus out of me – from Left-Right and in no particular order we have JAMES WAN (Saw, Insidious & The Conjuring) I’m sure you will agree this guys creepy ass dolls are enough to scare anyone half to death, his imagination and camera work makes the hairs on the back of your next stand up – up next is ROB ZOMBIE (Devils Rejects, House of a 1000 corpses & The Lords of Salem) Zombie delivers hard hitting violent horror movies, if your squeamish & easily upset then don’t watch – onto one of my favorites, South Korean KIM JEE-WOON (Tale of Two Sisters and I Saw the Devil) these two films terrified me on so many different levels – next up MARCUS DUNSTAN (The Collector & The Collection) a surprise maybe but this guy is still only 38 and the two movies he’s directed have been blood curdling fun – next on the list NEIL MARSHALL (Dog Soldiers & The Descent) another modern filmmaker who’s violent & brutal horror will terrify and at the end of each you will have to retrieve your heart from your mouth – and lastly to SCOTT DERRICKSON (Sinister & The Exorcism of Emily Rose) Derrickson is a talented writer but an even better horror director – his 2012 horror Sinister is one of the best Supernatural movies in recent years….
Whether or not in twenty years time we will be talking about any of these filmmakers in the same light as Fulci, Bava, Argento, Carpenter, Craven, Hooper and Romero is debatable but with the old guard starting to fade a new chapter in the movie world of terror has begun….
